The idea for Matteos started far away from the tropical playground of Waikiki. Original owner and chef Matty Jordan (born Matteo Giordano) grew up in Hoboken, New Jersey with childhood friend Frank Sinatra. In fact, he was delivered by Frank's mother, who was a midwife back in Hoboken. As their careers expanded Matty worked as Franks personal chef. In time Matty wanted to open his own restaurant. Matty went west and with his wife Wanda opened their first restaurant near the UCLA campus in Westwood, CA. Its is still in operation and is a favorite stop for celebrities. The couple crossed the Pacific in 1970 and brought traditional Italian fare to Oahu. The restaurant has undergone little change in its 34 years, including the staff. Throughout its tenure as a Waikiki landmark Matteo's has maintained its high standards. The seasoned and long time staff knows regular patrons by name and provides polished service with Aloha in an intimate environment. |
